  The Escaped Jackdaw

A man caught a jackdaw and tied a piece of string to one of its legs, and then gave it to his children for a pet. But the Jackdaw didn't at all like having to live with people; so, after a while, when he seemed to have become fairly tame and they didn't watch him so closely, he slipped away and flew back to his old haunts(栖息地).

Unfortunately, the string was still on his leg, and before long it got entangled1 in the branches of a tree and the Jackdaw couldn't get free, try as he would. He saw it was all up with him, and cried in despair, "Alas2, in gaining my freedom I have lost my life."

  The archer and the lion

An Archer1 went up into the hills to get some sport with his bow, and all the animals fled at the sight of him with the exception of the Lion, who stayed behind and challenged him to fight. But he shot an arrow at the Lion and hit him, and said, "There, you see what my messenger can do: just you wait a moment and I'll tackle you myself.' The Lion, however, when he felt the sting of the arrow, ran away as fast as his legs could carry him.

A fox, who had seen it all happen, said to the Lion, "Come, don't be a coward: why don't you stay and show fight?" But he Lion replied, "You won't get me to stay, not you: why, when he sends a messenger like that before him, he must himself be a terrible fellow to deal with."

  The Wise Servant

How fortunate is the master, and how well all goes in his house, when he has a wise servant who listens to his orders and does not obey them, but prefers following his own wisdom.

A clever John of this kind was once sent out by his master to seek a lost cow. He stayed away a long time, and the master thought, "Faithful John does not spare any pains over his work!"

As, however, he did not come back at all, the master was afraid lest some misfortune1 had befallen him, and set out himself to look for him. He had to search a long time, but at last he perceived the boy who was running up and down a large field.

"Now, dear John," said the master when he had got up to him, "hast thou found the cow which I sent thee to seek?" "No, master," he answered, "I have not found the cow, but then I have not looked for it."

"Then what hast thou looked for, John?" "Something better, and that luckily I have found." "What is that, John?" "Three blackbirds," answered the boy. "And where are they?" asked the master. "I see one of them, I hear the other, and I am running after the third," answered the wise boy.

Take example by this, do not trouble yourselves about your masters or their orders, but rather do what comes into your head and pleases you, and then you will act just as wisely as prudent2(谨慎的) John.

Although Chen Yaozi was a civil official in Song Dynasty, he loved archery very much, and was pretty good at it.

One day he was practicing in his own field, and eight or nine times out of ten he hit the target. He became quite complacent1.

Looking around, he found an old man who sells oil standing2 nearby. And the old man only nodded slightly towards his skills, not amazed. Angered by this, he called the old man to come over and asked him, "Do you also know archery? Aren't my skills brilliant?" The old man took out a gourd3 from the wicker-basket and placed it on the ground. He covered the opening of the gourd with a copper4 coin. And then he scooped5 a spoon of oil and began to pour the oil into the gourd through the hole in the coin drop by drop without wetting the coin. The old man said to Chen Yaozi, "This is only practice makes perfect, nothing so brilliant." Chen Yaozi laughed and sent him away.

There were a bailiff and a robber in Haozhao district, Anhui province. They both were noted1 for being skillful users of spear.

The robber threatened that he would kill the bailiff upon encounter.

One day, the bailiff strolled outside the city and happened to come across the robber in the market. Both with spear in hand and staring at each other, none of them dared to make the first move. The watching crowd circled them in the center. A stratagem2 occurred to the bailiff. He said to the robber, "The xianwei is here, both of us are outstanding people. Do you dare to have a fight with me before the xianwei?" The robber never gave a damn to the government soldiers. He agreed to the proposal without any hesitation3. The bailiff stroked him when he was unprepared and killed him with the spear. Thus saved his own life.

There was once a fool visited his friend.

The host offered him some food which he found tasteless. When the master of the house heard him complain, he added1 some salt to the dish.

The fool found the food now quite delicious. He thought, "The food is delicious because of the salt could produce this effect, a lot of salt must taste even better." The fool that he was, he started eating nothing but salt. Rather than tasting delicious. The salt spoiled his appetite2.

Once there was a fool who was bald.

Some came along and hit his head with pears several times. Although the assaults caused the fool to bleed, he quietly tolerated it and made no attempt to protect himself.

Someone who witnessed the incident asked, "Why didn't you run away? Instead you stood still and let him hit you until your head bleeds."

The fool replied, "That man is swollen1(浮肿的,浮夸的) with his strength, but he's quite foolish. When he saw my head is without hair, he thought it were a piece of rock. So he hit me with the pears. Bruising2(擦伤) my head, that's all there is to it."

But the other man pointed3 out, "It's you who are a fool and yet you claim he is foolish. If you weren't so foolish, you wouldn't be hit by him and you wouldn't have had your head bruised4 and still not run away."
